Academy of Social Sciences Names 2014 Fellows

Lord Richard Best, the longtime chief executive of the Joseph Rowntree Foundation; David Willetts, a Conservative Party MP and until July the minister of state for universities and science; and Loraine R R Gelsthorpe, the current president of the British Society for Criminology, are among 34 leading social science scholars and practitioners named as 2014 fellows to the Academy of Social Sciences today in London.

The Academy of Social Sciences is the Britain’s national academy of academics, learned societies and practitioners in the social sciences. It has around 1,000 individual fellows, who are distinguished scholars and practitioners from academia and the public and private sectors. They are awarded fellowship status after peer group review of the standing and impact of their work and evaluation of their contribution to wider social science. Fellows are entitled to use the post-nominal letters “FAcSS.”

The new fellows are:

Philip Allmendinger | Professor of Land Economy, University of Cambridge.  Professor Allmendinger is a Chartered Town Planner and Chartered Surveyor, and is one of the leading planning theorists whose work has had strong links to policy. He has a particular interest in post-modernism and its implications for planning theory and practice.

Arthur Aughey | Professor of Politics, University of Ulster. Professor Aughey is a leading authority on the politics of England and Englishness and Britishness, as well as the politics of Northern Ireland.

Ian Bache | Professor of Politics, University of Sheffield. Professor Bache is an internationally acknowledged authority on multi-level governance, Europeanisation and EU cohesion policy, with a recent interest in well-being and quality of life from a political science viewpoint.

Jo Beall | Director, Education and Society, British Council. Dr Beall is a leading researcher in development studies and has pushed forward new forms of research into cities conflict and state fragility.

Lord Richard Best OBE | Lord Best has been a leading light in housing studies and policy.

Paul J Boyle | Vice chancellor, University of Leicester. Professor Boyle led the Economic and Social Research Council for the past four years. He is also an internationally renowned expert in population and health geography.

Peter Buckley | Professor of International Business, Centre for International Business University of Leeds. Professor Buckley is a leading authority on international business.

Armando Carbonell | Senior Fellow and Chair in Planning and Urban Forum, Lincoln Institute of Land Policy, USA. Professor Carbonell is a leading figure in international research into land use and taxation.

Robert J H Chambers | Research Associate in Development Studies, University of Sussex. Dr Chambers has been a highly influential figure in the evolution of development studies, developing work on participatory rural appraisal so that it could be widely adopted.

Michelle M C Cini | Professor of European Politics, University of Bristol. Professor Cini is a leading expert on European Union institutions, especially their organisational cultures and public ethics.

Tony Dundon | Professor of Human Resource Management and Employment Relations, National University of Ireland, Galway. Professor Dundon is recognised as a key figure in the development of employment relations studies, in particular on employee voice, worker rights and regulatory systems of industrial relations.

Louise Fitzgerald | Visiting Professor (Organizational Change), Saïd Business School, University of Oxford. Professor Fitzgerald has been a key figure in the research of organisational change, health services research and in organisational development.

Francesca J Gains | Professor of Public Policy, University of Manchester. Professor Gains is a leading thinker in the field of political management arrangements in public organisations and their impact on policy-making processes and outcomes.

Loraine R R Gelsthorpe | Professor of Criminology and Criminal Justice, University of Cambridge. Professor Gelsthorpe is a pioneer in the study of women and criminal justice, as well as on community sanctions, probation, youth justice and sentencing. She is current President of the British Society for Criminology.

Charles Gore | Honorary Professor of Economics, University of Glasgow. Professor Gore has been a key contributor to work on spatial theory and regional analysis, working at the interface between geography, economics and development studies.

Richard P Hastings | Professor in Centre for Educational Development, Appraisal and Research, University of Warwick. Professor Hastings is a leading international researcher into the social science of learning disability.

David Heald | Professor of Accountancy, University of Aberdeen Business School. Professor Heald has been a notable figure in public sector budgeting and governance, with a particular interest in the financial arrangements for devolved government in the UK.

Glennys Howarth | Professor of Health Social Sciences, Plymouth University. Professor Howarth is a distinguished sociologist and pioneer in the social science study of death, dying and bereavement.

Stephen Hutchings | Professor of Russian Studies, University of Manchester. Professor Hutchings is a leading scholar in the field of cultural and media studies, with a particular interest in Russian television.

Craig Jeffrey | Professor of Development Geography, University of Oxford. Professor Jeffrey is an internationally recognised expert in the interdisciplinary fields of South Asian and Development studies, specialising in the social geography and political anthropology of contemporary India, in particular the topic of Indian youth.

Jennifer Jenkins | Chair of Global Englishes, University of Southampton. Professor Jenkins is a leading researcher and writer on the role of phonological issues in communication between non-native speakers in English.

Peter Kirby | Chair of Social History, Glasgow Caledonian University. Professor Kirby is a leading figure in the social and economic history of child workers, with an associated interest in health.

Sarah Monk | Deputy Director, Cambridge Centre for Housing and Planning Research, University of Cambridge. Ms Monk is a leading researcher in the field of housing and urban economics and planning.

Nikos Ntoumanis | Professor in Exercise and Sport Psychology, University of Birmingham. Professor Ntoumanis has conducted pioneering research into sport and exercise motivation.

Ian Rivers | Professor of Human Development (Education), Brunel University. Professor Rivers is a leading influential writer on bullying, in particular homophobic bullying and bystander behaviour.

Elaine Sharland | Professor of Social Work Research, University of Sussex. Professor Sharland is a key researcher in risk and child protection.

Nigel South | Professor in Sociology, University of Essex. Professor South is an internationally recognised sociologist and criminologist, and is a founding figure of the study of ‘green’ criminology.

Andrew W Stark | Coutts Professor of Accounting and Finance, Manchester Business School. Professor Stark is a leading thinker in the area of market-based accounting, working closely with a variety of social science disciplines.

Corinne Swain OBE | Arup Fellow: Planning. Ms Swain is an intellectual leader in policy and practice in spatial planning in the UK.

Imogen Taylor | Professor of Social Work and Social Care, University of Sussex. Professor Taylor is a leader in pedagogic research in social work and professional development.

Carole Torgerson | Professor of Education, Durham University. Professor Torgerson has been the leading proponent of the use of randomised control trials and systematic reviews in education policy development.

Michael E J Wadsworth | Emeritus Professor in Epidemiology and Public Health, University College London. Professor Wadsworth has been a leading figure in longitudinal studies, having been Director of the MRC National Survey of Health and Development, and one of the founders of the Longview think tank.

Rt Hon David Willetts MP | MP for Havant. David Willetts is a politician who has encouraged, used and contributed to social science during his career.

Professor Simon J Williams | Professor of Sociology, University of Warwick. Professor Williams is a leading medical sociologist, working especially on the sociologies of the body, emotions and chronic illness, as well as sleep.
