Index on Censorship, a Social Science Space partner that advocates for freedom of expression and against censorship throughout the world, has appointed Jodie Ginsberg as its new chief executive officer.

Ginsberg, who takes up her post in mid-May, comes from the think tank Demos, where she served as deputy director of Demos Finance. A former London bureau chief for Reuters, she worked for more than a decade as a foreign correspondent and business journalist. She was previously head of communications for Camfed, a non-profit organization working in girls’ education.

She replaces Kirsty Hughes as CEO; Hughes announced in February she was leaving to pursue new projects and writing in the international and European politics arena. Hughes joined Index in April 2012.

“Index’s work defending freedom of expression on- and off-line is more important than ever in the face of growing censorship in many countries around the world from Turkey to Russia, from Azerbaijan to India to China,” the organization’s chair, David Aaronovitch, said. “I am sure Jodie will build on the great work of her predecessor Kirsty Hughes and all the Index staff, and lead Index into new and important campaigns.”
