Leadership, Vision, Strategy, and the Art of Publishing in India

Editor’s note: We are pleased to welcome Dr. Guru Prakash Prabhakar, senior lecturer of project management at Bristol Business School, University of the West of England. Dr. Prabhakar published “Leadership, Vision, Strategy, and the Art of Publishing in India: An Interview With the Legendary Tejeshwar Singh of Sage Publications (India),” co-authored by Pankaj Saran of EMPI Business School and Joyce Liddle of Teesside University Business School, in the Journal of Management Inquiry.

Leaders from India have received great attention from the world in diverse areas. With the globalisation of business and the whole world more or less acting as an integrated system, it is imperative to look into what constitutes a typical Indian leader, both from corporate and from not-for-profit perspectives.

As India looms in the limelight in the current financial crisis as one of few countries experiencing economic growth, business schools and corporations are beginning to look at potential opportunities and thought leadership in this country.

This study was initiated to explore the entrepreneurial and leadership behaviours of top leaders and attempts to find out the key leader behaviours that are vital to businesses. In the longer term it would also help to identify what leader behaviours are important in different countries and in different settings, as what might “click” in India may not “click” elsewhere.

In a rare and privileged interview, Tejeshwar Singh discusses how he founded Sage-India and nurtured it into a prominent publishing company, the cultural challenges he faced in the business of publishing in India, and how he overcame them. These life experiences can inspire budding managers and entrepreneurs.
