UK’s Academy of Social Sciences Names 37 Fellows for Spring 2021

February 16, 2021 1766

Britain’s Academy of Social Sciences has named 37 individuals in its spring 2021 cohort of fellows. New fellows are recognized, after an independent peer review process, for the excellence and impact of their work and their wider contributions to the social sciences for public benefit.

A number of the new fellows are working on particularly nettlesome social issues that defy the boundaries of discipline. Professor Monder Ram, for example, who founded and directs the Centre for Research in Ethnic Minority Entrepreneurship at Aston University, has shaped the field on ethnic minority entrepreneurship. Among many initiatives benefitting diverse and overlooked communities, he led the first and largest research project on ethnic minority businesses and banks in the UK. The findings were an important reference for financial/business support stakeholders working with ethnic minority communities.

Another example is Tracy Shildrick, a professor at the University of Newcastle internationally recognized for her work on youth transitions and intergenerational poverty. She has changed how we think, understand, and research these areas, challenging key myths about how and why poverty travels across generations and the difficulties young people face in making transitions to adulthood in conditions of marked inequality.

“Our new fellows have been selected for the excellence of their research, impact, thought leadership, and the practical application of social science to real world problems,” said Roger Goodman, president of the Academy of Social Sciences. “I congratulate them all and look forward to collaborating with them in promoting high quality social science in the UK and across the world.”

The Academy includes over 1,400 fellows, 46 member learned societies and a number of affiliates, altogether comprising a community of more than 90,000 social scientists
