Webinar: Teaching Computational Social Science

March 15, 2023 1004

Two European experts on data-driven research in the social sciences will headline a webinar later this month hosted by Social Science Space sister site Methodspace. The webinar, “Teaching Computational Social Science,” will offer practical tips to improve instructional practice or guidance with student researchers.

Matti Nelimarkka, left, and Friedolin Merhout

The hour-long event takes place on Thursday March 23, at 2 pm EST / 6 pm GMT. Registered viewers will receive a link to the webinar recording.

During the event, Matti Nelimarkka and Friedolin Merhout will discuss strategies for engaging with students and building the skills needed to design, plan, and conduct studies using computational social science methods. They will offer examples from their own experience in course design and teaching – including how to work past problems students sometimes have when trying to learn these complex concepts.

Nelimarkka, alecturer at the University of Helsinki, and Aalto University, Finland, is the author of Computational Thinking and Social Science: Combining Programming, Methodologies and Fundamental Concepts. Merhout is an assistant professor at the Sociologisk Institut at the University of Copenhagen. He is the director of graduate studies for the interdisciplinary MSc in Social Data Science.

Janet Salmons, research community manager for Sage Methodspace, will moderate the discussion.

Sage, the parent of Social Science Space, is a global academic publisher of books, journals, and library resources with a growing range of technologies to enable discovery, access, and engagement. Believing that research and education are critical in shaping society, 24-year-old Sara Miller McCune founded Sage in 1965. Today, we are controlled by a group of trustees charged with maintaining our independence and mission indefinitely.
